Herbal Spotlight: Calendula
Why Calendula is a Star Herb
Calendula (Calendula officinalis) is often called the “sunshine flower” for its bright golden petals that bring cheer to the garden and to the home. For centuries, people around the world have enjoyed using calendula in teas, crafts, and recipes — and at Hilltop Botanicals, it’s one of our favorite homegrown flowers.
How to Enjoy Calendula
In the Kitchen: Calendula petals can be dried and added to teas for their vibrant color and mild floral taste. They’ve also been sprinkled into breads, rice dishes, and salads as a colorful garnish.
In Crafts: The petals lend a natural golden tint when added to handmade soaps, oils, or even fabric dyes. Many crafters prize calendula for its ability to bring a warm, sunny hue to everyday items.
In the Garden: Beyond its beauty, calendula also attracts pollinators and brightens up vegetable beds. It’s a flower that gives both joy and usefulness throughout the growing season.
Growing & Harvesting Tips
Calendula is simple to grow and thrives in full sun. The more you pick the blossoms, the more the plant continues to flower. We like to harvest blossoms in the mid-morning once the dew has dried, then spread them out on screens in a shaded, airy spot until crisp. Stored in airtight jars, the petals keep their golden glow for months.
At Hilltop Botanicals
We gather calendula blossoms from our Kentucky homestead and dry them in small batches. You’ll see these petals featured in our seasonal tea blends, oils, and handmade crafts. For us, calendula is both practical and symbolic — a reminder of sunshine even as the days grow shorter.
